Botox Side Effects

Botox Side EffectsBotox injections can be a great option for treating deep expression lines. Expression lines can form when facial expressions are made repeatedly. These expressions may be conscious or unconscious, but over time, the elastin and collagen can begin to break down. As these lines begin to appear permanently etched on your face, they can make you look angry, sad or older than your years. Botox can be an excellent option, but many people are concerned about potential Botox side effects.

The injections contain botulinum toxin, which blocks the chemical nerve signals to the muscles and temporarily relaxes them. It is most appropriate for treating frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and other deep expression lines. It may also be used to treat chronic migraine, lazy eye, cervical dystonia, hyperhidrosis and other medical issues. Results can last from three to six months, and the injections can be repeated to maintain your new look.

When performed by an experienced physician, Botox injections are considered safe and effective with a low risk of side effects. The most common Botox side effects can include headache, flu-like symptoms and bruising or swelling at the injection site. These tend to be mild and short-lived. Less commonly, patients may experience eyelid droop, dry eye or excessive tearing. Rarely, the botulinum toxin can spread from the injection site and trigger other symptoms, including muscle weakness, vision problems, trouble speaking, trouble swallowing, trouble breathing and loss of bladder control. If you experience any serious side effects, contact our doctor as soon as possible.

Most Botox side effects are mild and self-limiting, but the treatment may not be appropriate for pregnant or lactating women. Contact our office today to learn more about Botox side effects and benefits or to schedule your appointment with Dr. Peyman Ghasri, our skin doctor in Los Angeles.
