Skin Cancer Types
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. today. The most common skin cancer types include melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Peyman Ghasri offers comprehensive skin cancer care and a variety of treatment options that can restore your skin’s health.
The most serious of the skin cancer types, melanoma often looks similar to a mole, but it may have jagged or notched borders, irregular coloring and may be quite large. Melanoma can metastasize throughout the body and can be deadly.
Another of the common skin cancer types is basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma may look like a scar, a shiny bump or an irritated sore. It rarely metastasizes, but it can grow and become quite disfiguring if not promptly treated.
Squamous cell carcinoma often looks like a scaly patch, a depressed area or a wart, and they may bleed or crust. Although squamous cell carcinoma is easy to manage and treat when caught early, it can be deadly when left untreated.
Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma can occur in people of any age and any type of skin but tend to be most common in those with fair skin, light hair and light eyes and people who work outside, spend considerable amounts of time in the sun and who have a history of childhood sunburn.
